Blogs - Optimization For Your Target Audience
First up whatever you’re doing is probably wrong.
Secondly, whatever you’re doing is probably right!
Errr, seems a tad confusing doesn’t it, well the truth is we’re talking about SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and this is just as much an art form as a science.
The good news is, there may not be rules but there are guidelines you can follow to help you get the traffic you want.
1. Have Something Useful To Say
Make sure whatever your post is for it passes the following test:
Read the post yourself and if you have lost the will to live or are bored sh*tless, it’s time to change the content or not bother at all!
2. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid!)
Avoid acronyms (if you do add them, make sure you explain them straight away) and keep big words to a minimum. If you don’t, you’ll obfuscate the meaning of your message
. Remember, just because it’s common knowledge to you, it isn’t to everyone else - or put another way “We’re all ignorant - only on different subjects”.
(BTW (By The Way) - To obfuscate means to make things more difficult to read, if you’re a pedant you will no doubt supply a stricter definition - along with one for pedant too!)
3. Break It Up
A blog with one sentence crashing into the next, into the next… is very hard to read and comprehend. Split things up with proper use of bold and headlines. Remember you want to keep your reader attentive.
4. Eye Candy
Get your own theme for your blog - make it stand out from the crowd but at the same time be visually easy on the eye and appealing. One thing you don’t want to do is go mad with HTML having colours everywhere, blinking graphics and fonts that blend into the page. You’d be surprised - it still happens in 2006, and those blogs just don’t get read (except for search engine spiders).
5. Titles And Headlines
Spend a little time thinking of a good title - it’s got to be informative, short, snappy and attention grabbing. Oh and if you can incorporate your keywords into your title - way to go! There’s nothing worse than seeing a headline like: “What I Did Today” (Unless you’re a really interesting person who’s already well known) or “Another Post…” - No one will read ‘em.
That’ll do for now, I’ll come back again to add some more at some point (time being what it is, I’ve got to get onto the next task…)
All the best,
Tom
