Technology Overload and Stress

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

Arrrrgggghhhhh!

How often do you suffer from Technology Overload and Stress!!!

I have just found out from one of my subscribers (a big thank you to you Frank) that my blog posts were not visible using Internet Explorer. A bit of digging around and I found the problem - without getting too technical, I omitted a tag in a header.

Right that’s as technical as it gets.

No matter how hard you try, you have to accept that to err is human. I guess I’m just as human - perhaps even more human than the next guy by that definition! The above example is just one of the frustrations SelfHelpTips.com has thrown at me since it’s launch a couple of months back.

Personally, I have put together the entire site you see - this explains why it’s in places a little rough around the edges - lol. But seriously, I couldn’t draw a circle without a compass but that didn’t stop me getting this website up and running.

It’s not my first site, it’s not my last either - I’m in a constant state of flux learning new things - be they technical, mind, body or spirit related. I suppose if I sat down and thought about it all too hard I could easily become overwhelmed with “the mountain” there is ahead, and the sharp incline already behind.

I’m sure you can identify with this, let’s face it there are times in all our lives when we think we cannot surmount a given obstacle. The trick of course is to perservere and continue, keep the momentum going and make sure that momentum is taking you in the right direction.

It’s soul destroying to find you have busted a gut for months only to be further away from your goals. Here speaketh the voice of experience, but that’s another story…

Speaking of goals, how are you getting on with the goal achievement course?

Keep at it, I promise it’s worth the effort.

So no matter what obstacles you currently face, keep the destination in mind and make sure you reward yourself along the way - it can be a lonely long road with no end otherwise!

If you’re having one of those days with technology overload like me, remember there’s always tomorrow…

Alkalize to Energize

Monday, January 30th, 2006

Or as I’d normally write it “Alkalise to Energise”.

I am running through the Anthony Robbins “Get The Edge” course right now. One of the sessions deals with “Energy” and the focus of that particular CD is to do with your diet.

You are what you eat after all.

There are some pretty incredible stories on the CD demonstrating the benefits of a high alkaline diet - particularly if you up the ante by detoxing for at least 3 days and superhydrating yourself with high alkaline drinks (Wheatgrass is one of the core constituents).

So, duly inspired, I went to my local health store and purchased a bottle of “Green” alkaline drink. Upon first sniffing the concoction, I was brought straight back to where I grew up - next to my house was a cornfield and I could smell it straight away.

I thought I’d have a hard time drinking it but to be honest it didn’t taste that bad at all.

It’s been a few days now and I can tell you, I do have more energy - I haven’t gone the whole hog and “detoxed” but instead have supplemented my diet (normally pretty good) ;-) with the drink - and lots of water.

Verdict:
Highly Recommended.

May your God go with you, whereever you are.

Achieving Your Goals Part II

Wednesday, January 18th, 2006

Now that you’ve made your list, take a look at it. See each of the things you’ve listed individually, as though it were real.

Do this one at a time.

Some people say that seeing it helps you to believe it can be done. That’s true. Others say that actually focusing on it helps to get your subconscious to believe it’s possible and start making it happen. That’s also true. But those aren’t the reasons I suggest this.

I want you to see it for another reason. If you have always thought “I’d like to drive a fancy car,” see that happening. How does that actually make you feel?

Does it make no real difference in how you feel? (Forget how others feel about you. That’s their business, not yours.)

Does it actually make you feel happier? Maybe it represents a milestone, or gives you a sense of accomplishment.

You need to see it, to put yourself in the situation as though it were real, to know if it’s something you really want, or if it’s something you think you’re supposed to want.

Life is way too short to spend it messing with things you don’t want, just to live up to someone else’s expectations. If they’re concerned with laying expectations on other people, they won’t be made happy when you fulfill them anyway.

It’s your life.

What do you really want?

If there’s something on that list that you don’t see making a big change in your happiness, drop it like a hot rock. It will keep you from getting something you DO want.

Anything that you decide isn’t really important to you, cross it off.

Now, look at the list again.

How many of the things that you want don’t cost money at all? Probably some of the most important ones, I’d bet. Those are what I call “Permission Goals.”

Maybe you feel you have to somehow prove you deserve them. This can range from where you live, to what kind of people you have in your life.

Maybe you think you don’t have the time. These can be things like learning a language or musical instrument, or taking up a new hobby.

Move those goals over to another list. (There’s a worksheet provided for this.) These may be easy, or they may be the hardest to achieve, because they involve a decision. Usually they don’t involve much more than that.

Something has kept you from making the decision in the past. If it’s just not realizing that a decision was all that was in the way, or pure routine, they’ll be easy. Just do it.

If it’s some psychological issue, you’re going to have to deal with that. I’m not a psychologist, so we’ll leave that for a professional to help with.

Again, move those goals to the Permission Goals list, and cross them off the one you’re working with now.

Cleaning House

Now, you’re going to create one more list. Things to get rid of.

Face it, if your life is full of stress, and your time consumed by things you don’t enjoy, your chance of getting where you want to be is horribly reduced. If you somehow managed to get there despite those things, carrying them along with you will keep you from enjoying your goals.

You need to get rid of the clutter.

What exists in your life right now that won’t exist in your perfect life? What annoys you without giving anything positive back? What stresses, unpleasant relationships, environmental conditions, work issues, routines, commitments, etc?

List them all.

There are some types of things that should be dropped immediately. The first group are things that you do because you’re concerned about what others will think of you if you don’t do them.

If your happiness depends on what someone else thinks of you, you’ll never have control of your life. And you’ll never be happy.

You can’t please everyone. Trying is a sucker’s game.

….

Another group are the things you do because “someone has to.” Do they really? And if so, why you? What horrible thing would happen if you stopped doing them?

Commitments are more complicated. If you agreed to something, you need to make sure it’s taken care of. Or find an honest way to get out of the commitment or get it fulfilled in some other way.

Note: I’m talking about commitments that you don’t want. There are things each of us are committed to that we wouldn’t be happier giving up.

Ask yourself for many of these: Did I really agree to this, or is it defined as a commitment by convention or default?

If you didn’t agree to it, it’s not a commitment. It’s an expectation.

Someone else’s expectation. And their problem.

….

Yet another group is “Stuff I paid for.”

Hey - if you paid for it, you can drop it just as fast as you like. Don’t throw good money (and time) after a bad investment or an interest that’s waned.

Maybe you paid with effort, and you want to try and make the thing work, despite all the proof that it won’t. That’s fine if it’s something that really important to you. Just don’t do it to avoid admitting a mistake. There are better ways to live.

Failing to admit a mistake doesn’t make it less of a mistake. It makes it more of one.

….

Now, take all the things you can get rid of immediately and put them on the “Things To Get Rid Of” list.

Whatever is left is likely something that involves a void to fill. Money to pay off debts or skills needed to alleviate shortcomings.

Put those on the “Main Goals” list, if they’re really things that you need to be happy.

Remember, the only definition of what’s important in your happiness is the one you set. What I or anyone else might think of it is completely unimportant.

If it makes you truly happy without actively interfering with someone else’s life, it’s what you should do.

4.5 out of 5 ain’t bad

Friday, January 6th, 2006

Well, I missed my first 0630 wake up call this morning.

But I was up to 0400 so there were extenuating circumstances - that’s the problem with having a mind on fire with ideas.

Which reminds me - whenever you get those great ideas (and we all have them more frequently than we think) - WRITE THEM DOWN.

You may think you’ll remember them but trust me it’s like trying to catch water in your hands - record them as fast and as soon as you can.

Achieving Your Goals Part 1

Achieving Goals: It’s All About Change – The Catch?

Change is uncomfortable.

Setting and achieving goals is about something more profound than creating change. It’s about managing change, and putting your future completely in your control.

No matter what it is you want to achieve. Financial Freedom ideas, health , mind, body and spirit goals, you can have what you want.

Now to work…

Get yourself a folder to hold your printouts in, put in a divider with the title “Goals Brainstorming”. Next, print out the accompanying: “Brainstorming Goals” worksheet below. Now get yourself comfortable. You’ve got some thinking and ulimately some changing to do.

Now for a toughie - “What do you want?”

If your life could be anything you wanted it to be, what would it be right now?

Answer the questions in your worksheet.

For example

  • Where would you live?
  • Who would your friends be? What kind of people would you like to spend your time with?
  • How would you spend your time, if you could be doing anything at all that you wanted?
  • What would you eat? Wear? Listen to?
  • Would you work? If so, what would you do? If not, what would you do?
  • What do you want to learn? To know? To be?
  • Where would you like to vacation? What would you do?
  • What else would be a part of your perfect life?

Start writing. Write down the answers to every one of those questions. Be complete. List everything you’d like to have in your life. Don’t assign money values, or think about cash in the bank right now. That’s for later.

While you’re writing these things down, add anything else that you would really like to make a part of your life. Take your time.

You can have anything you want (within reason, you’re not going to become a billionaire overnight – sorry). Make a list of all the things you want.

We will stop here today - “What, where’s the rest of it?”, I hear you say. Well, I have a confession to make and I have a sneaking suspicion you may identify with it – at least at one point in time or another.

Have you ever run through a self improvement course, eager to ‘get it finished’ and realise the benefits? Personally, I’ve gone through so many courses/books/CD’s it’s painful to recall.

Well, that’s not what we’re going to do here. This is your life, take the time now to sit down and really think about what the goals are in your life right now. You may even find you can’t think of any major goals – but hey, that’s ok too.

Just take your time and really think.

So then, back to the worksheet!!!

Part II coming very soon…

The Best Time To Plant A Seed

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

There is an old Chinese proverb that goes like so:

“The best time to plant a seed is 20 years ago, the second best time is now”.

No matter what it is you are hoping to do,
No matter how old you are,
No matter what your present circumstances,

The best thing you can do right now to realise your dreams is to take that first step.

It doesn’t matter whether you want to find out how to make pumpkin seeds or make your first million, whatever your goal you need to take action now.

No if’s, but’s or maybe’s.

No I’m too old/too young/too out of shape/too tired, no excuses.

You’re on this world a fixed amount of time and every second that passes will not be returned.

What is it you want with your life?

Remember, you’re the only one that will make it happen in this lifetime…

Wishing you the best of success,
Tom

Committment - Will I Get Off My Assets?

Sunday, January 1st, 2006

I’m writing this piece not as a New Year’s resolution - the timing is coincidental.

You see, we all have our foibles and ‘getting up’ has been one of mine recently - whereas I used to get up at an early hour, of late I have slipped into the shady underworld of the duvet darkness…

Yes, it’s nice to have a lie in, being all toasty in bed whilst the world awakens to a chilly or more often than not chilly and wet start here in the UK.

But I’ve decided to change my course and arise early - 0630 or earlier on weekdays and 0730 or earlier on weekends. And I’ve got to do this 25 out of the next 30 days - more on that later.

Why am I telling you?

Simple.

It’s a matter of committment, every little bit of extra pressure exerted on me will help me achieve this goal. I’ll post back in here over the coming month to see how the tally is progressing…

Why 30 days? Well we are creatures of habits - if you can establish a new habit for 30 days, you are very likely going to keep that habit going - this information has been known for several decades dating back to the early Space program with NASA. I’ll touch on that in another post in due course.

Why 25 out of 30?

Ahh, good question - I’m only human after all ;-)
