Tubby Nerd Cracks Code To Increase Website Traffic

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Well, he’s (Ed Dale aka Ted Legend) put together a “neato” video on what trackbacks are and how you can use them (if you haven’t already) to increase traffic to your web site.

And funnily enough - this post is using a trackback too!

Well, it would be RUDE not to!

All the best,

An Answer To Any Question - Goals, Tasks, Whatever You Need To Know

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Do you ever find yourself stuck - unable to decide on the next course of action?

For example:

  • Do you have a huge “things to do list” and don’t know where to start?
  • Maybe you have a list of goals and don’t know which one to tackle first?
  • Maybe you simply have a question which requires a YES/NO answer but you are truly stuck?

Can you identify with any of the above?

We all worry about whether we are doing the right thing or not at any given time. At a conscious level we are quite often paralysed into inaction because we don’t know what to tackle first.

Worry not, here’s a free tool which can help - whenever you find yourself stuck on any question whatsoever at a conscious level, use this tool to get the answer from your other than conscious mind:

Crafty Spam Merchants Can Add You To Their Lists

Friday, October 6th, 2006

If you send any amount of emails on a regular basis or indeed have a mailing list on an autoresponder, you will no doubt have received automated responses from your list telling you they have put in SPAM control software and you need to manually register with them.

Fair enough I hear you say but I’ve just come across a very sly spammer trick.

I received an email (from a spammer) who wrote the following:

I apologize for this automatic reply to your email.
To control spam, I now allow incoming messages only from senders I have approved beforehand.
If you would like to be added to my list of approved senders, please fill out the short request form (see link below). Once I approve you, I will receive your original message in my inbox. You do not need to resend your message. I apologize for this one-time inconvenience.
Click the link below to fill out the request:”
Naturally enough I did not include the link above - nor did I click it as it would just tell the spammer they had a live address.
So beware of any such confirmations you may come across in your inbox - I know it’s easy to have your brain out of gear and just click on the link (due to previous conditioning) but it will inevitably lead to pain if you do with a lot of lost time filtering the rubbish from your inbox.

5 Steps To Increase Your Web Site Conversion

Friday, October 6th, 2006

You may well be aware of the KISS acronym:

Keep It Simple Stupid!

It’s a good one to remember when you are designing your website. It must have a logical flow/funnel to bring your visitors through. Too many choices leads to confusion. So the underlying simplicity of your site and it’s web pages is of paramount importance.

Here are several ways to keep your pages simple, and increase conversions.

1. One “Theme” on the page.

If you can keep your focus having information related to a single theme/topic per page, this will help keep visitors “on track” immensely.

Readers will not flit from one side of the page to another if they have a single option in terms of information displayed, they read in a linear fashion. This means you need to give them fewer (not more) hyperlinking choices.

2. Keep your sentences simple.

There’s no point using big/complex words where a shorter easier description will do. Waffly messages or convoluted ways of explaining things will lose your reader rather than impress them.
3. Minimise the use of pictures

One or two quality images can support your sales message. You should test wheter the addition or omission of graphics will help or hurt your sales conversion. Err on the side of caution by minimizing your use of graphics.

Too many graphics distract your readers.
4. Offers Should Be Simple

Too many puchasing options can lead to confusion and ultimately a reduction in conversion rates with your visitors.

Try to have a single purchasing option and when it comes to images - this is a good time to have one, namely showing which types of credit cards you accept.

5. Simplify Your Forms

Be they sales or subscription, your forms need to be kept simple and short. The longer they become, the worse the response rate. If the information is not needed on the form, rip it off.
So rather than loving your site - KISS it!

All the best,

Tom
